Vehicle: 2018 Optima S
Difficulty: Easy
Time: ~1 hour

One of the things I wanted with my new Optima was a mirror with Homelink. We have a gate opener and a garage opener, so it'd be nice to have both remotes integrated into the mirror. Plus the auto-dimming is a nice feature where I live - it's very rural and often other driver's forget to turn their high beams off.

I bought a kit from here for $200:

You need P/N D5062-ADU00 since it comes with the harness.
In all honesty though, you could buy a used mirror off eBay and make your own harness. I've seen some folks tapping into the power for the dome light or sunroof. This would probably work, but I figured an extra half hour of work to do it correctly was worth it. Especially if you ever have issues with your sunroof, you don't need to worry about warranty hassles.

Here's the installation instructions from Kia:

Kit contents:

Recommend disconnecting the battery first.
Pull back the weatherstripping and remove the A-pillar. You need to pull it out about an inch and use a pair of cutters to cut the breakaway tab. This needs to be replaced.

The old and new tab. Apparently it's needed for the side airbag to deploy properly.

Remove the 2 screws under the sunglass holder.

Remove the screw for the sunvisor. This part doesn't need to be removed however.

From the fuse panel, push out the side panel.

Remove this screw under the cover:

Remove the lower dash panel.

Clip locations on backside of dash panel.

Connector wrapped in foam tape. Stuff behind the headliner.

Zip tie wires down A-pillar

Run behind dash. Watch out for E-brake linkages.

Wire connections. The Kia kit used T-taps. I'm not a fan of them. It's nice that you can disconnect them with a spade connector, but I'd rather use the traditional taps you get at an auto store.
The switched ignition line goes to the yellow wire on pin #7. The constant power goes to pin #8, red wire.

Use an 8mm socket pressed into the hood release to compress the tabs. At the same time, pry the lever out and it'll pop off. Attach the ground to the ground point just behind it.

Reinstall all panels in reverse order. Insert the new tether clip into the A-pillar and reinstall.

Completed installation. Note the wire in the top left is our home power from the pole.

Yeah, I think it allows the panel to disconnect a certain amount to let the airbag deploy, without breaking away (and the panel then smacking you in the face). Neat design but would be nice if they made it removable. Kinda crummy to have to buy a new clip every time you remove the A pillar (not that it's done often, but still...)

Thanks again Spazstic for the incentive...my husband just finished installing my auto dimming mirror...I just got back from driving in circles to calibrate the compass...took two times around...lol!

Now we don't have to have the garage door opener on the visor...no more rattles!
Nice! Glad I could assist. :)

I should also note, if you have the auto-dimming mirror but not Homelink, they have the same plug. You can simply unplug your OEM auto-dimming mirror and replace it with the auto-dimming with Homelink mirror.

Not a dumb question at all! I'll try that tomorrow when I put all the trim back on. The cold must have numbed my brain...lol I just held it up there.

I still have front/rear camera to install/wire up. I had an accident last year on expressway. My statement, limo entered expressway, crossed empty right lane and hit me mid doors on right side in middle lane. His story, I turned into him. No witnesses. Still hasn't seen arbitration. Since then, like the folks in Russia, I have front and rear cameras.

One other thing....the plastic inserts in the roof for the two screws that secure the dome light housing. They are too small and turn in the square holes. I had to pull down on the housing to unscrew.
I've been wanting to install a camera system like that too. Had a similar he said/ she said incident when the other person was clearly at fault. But, no witnesses or video.

And yes, the wire cover snaps in place and slides to extend to the headliner.

Yeah, it's embarrassing about the wire cover...lol I Dremel'd a slot in it at mirror mount and ran the camera power wire through it.

I really like the Blackvue brand. I had a DR650S-2CH in my Malibu. I purchased a DR750S-2CH for the Optima which has upgraded sensors and the rear camera will now do 1080P. I also install their Power Magic Pro. Flip a switch on it and you can record when parked.

That looks like a nice setup, but $400+! That's real money!

Not if they Hit you and lie about it, you got screwed. Now if you got the goods on them in full HD, you're covered, but in reality if you go on a road trip with tools, you will not break down, if you don't, guess what! Now-a-days, you need that Dash and Rear Trunk Camcorder. Too many people driving that should not be driving because of one thing or another.

Once my OCC is installed, Dash and Rear cam is next. I have too much money wrapped up in cars..........................
Here in southern California, it doesn't matter anyway, chances are good they don't have a license or insurance. [emoji53]
