I got an SXL optima and the sound is pretty bumpin in there. You could always add a subwoofer system in the trunk, thats what I had in my Rio for a while and it was awesome. The stock sound in a Rio has to be worse than whats in your EX optima right now. So if it could do wonders for that, then it may help out with the sound issues.

Is there a misconfiguration or problem that prevents the existing system from working properly?

Have you tried going into your sound settings, then adjusting the balance fully to the left, making sure it works, then fully to the right, making sure that works? Then put back to default/centered, and adjust fade all the way forward, all the way back?

Maybe a connector came loose to make it sound weird, or something blew out in the head unit?
