This is the only other thread I found on the forum.

I know a search online can work but I'd like to get anyone's opinion if they've experienced this code.

First, the KIA dealership couldn't get me in until 1-2 weeks.

I am actually surprised that the service representative didn't have a coder reader on them.

I had an oil change at a drive through shop. The staff member admitted to having a cheap code reader.

So cheap that the reader couldn't erase the code. So, the engine light stays on.

After talking about it and looking it up online it doesn't seem to be a timely issue.

But again, I was curious to hear other experience with this specific code?

P0456 Gas cap. The cap on my 2.0T is very hard to turn to get it to click, so normally the attendant
tightens it down and that's it, no farther. Sometimes I get the 456, so stop the car, muscle the cap on
until it clicks, delete the code and good to go. If you've tightened the cap, it needs drive cycles to
turn off the cel, but also could be a bad cap or the purge valve that you'll need to check.

Thanks Turbonut!

Before posting this I actually walked out to my car and tightened the gas cap as best I could.

I didn't really hear it click like usually but I also didn't want to break it.

Would either of you say that your gas cap is having trouble clicking, as though the gas cap is no longer working properly?

That's my problem, I can't get mine to click even though I tighten it normally how I've always tightened it when I used to get a click, now nothing.

Is there a way to disassemble the gas cap and clean the mechanism so that it clicks or otherwise operates properly like it used to? When I look at mine I'm not sure even how to pull it off the car without breaking it...

Yes! I noticed it recently. My fuel cap won't click like it used to. But my Optima is going on 10 years.

I'm not sure about disassembling the cap but if the error code is in fact because of a leak coming from the cap I'm going to look into it.

Mine is fine, I purchased a replacement cap years ago because the original leaked, and this
cap has been that way since day one. Guess I should have taken it back, but it certainly
strengthens the fingers trying to get it to click.
If OP has a problem, no click, just purchase another, cheap.

Is there a way to disassemble the gas tank cap to see why it stopped clicking?

I checked Rockauto but didn't see info on whether those click, so I can't decide whether to get an OEM from Kia or use Rockauto non-OEM brands. Rockauto has some gas tank caps that are tethered, and some that are not tethered.

Thanks again for your help Turbonut!

Would think any new cap should click when tightened, but mine doesn't have the tether.
I was annoyed that some stations simply drop the cap on the quarter panel rather than putting
it in the holder, so no strap on my cap. The other day I needed gas so the attendant removed
the cap and rather than placing it in the holder sat it on the trunk. Glad it was my knock-around
car as if it had been one of the other two, I would have been out of the car as fast as this old
guy could move. Just lazy people, and always like it when they need to lay their hand on the
car to support themselves when taking the cap off, so one of the other cars, although 33 years
old, I always get out before they even get near the car.

If you always have an attendant fill up your gas, then I presume you live in a state that doesn't allow self-serve?
