Hello,
My 2013 Kia optima lx's engine locked without warning last week. It has 118k miles. I had a new battery installed 2 months ago, new front brake pads/rotors, oil change and tire rotation early last week prior to the engine lock.

I think it has the KDS warranty (not sure what this is, or if it matters. )

Mechanic says it needs a new engine. Or I need a new car.

Any thoughts, suggestions?
Thank you, Sherilee

Hopefully you can receive a free engine, and get a loaner car for free too while they install the free replacement engine.

Did the mechanic work for a Kia dealership, or was it a non-kia mechanic?

Yes speak to a Kia dealership. You might have to have the car towed there. Do you know if the car displays a flashing check engine light? If yes, do not clear that light. The dealership will want to see it. Hope your mechanic doesn't clear the check engine light.

As KF stated above, do not clear the code, and if the KSDS (953) update has been installed, an engine replacement will be done, compliments of Kia, so tow the car to the dealership. They will be responsible for the towing cost and are obligated to offer a loaner if available, or $40 p/diem towards a rental. When the oil filler cap is removed and no buildup is seen on the engine there will be no problem, but may ask for maintenance records of oil changes if maintenance suspect.

Thank you! Had a lumbar spine fusion last week (my friend was driving the car back home when it seized).
Am in a world of pain and my cognitive ability is slow.
Please advise if I have the actions to take in correct order:

1. Call the local Kia dealership/repair place ,

2. Have car towed to them

3. Not sure....should I call Kia corporate?

The VIN is 5XXGM4A74DG116196

Hi, would you please review the reply I sent to bigbxsallday and chime in?
Thank you

Do # 1, not 2, ask dealer to tow it. Do # 3 if dealer doesn't want to cover under warranty, assuming it has a P1326 CEL code stored that is.

Here's the engine repair work done in July, 2019
The SC147 is just the engine inspection and was initiated May 2017.
You need to have the 953 update installed that came out in 2019. This is the service campaign
that gives you the lifetime warranty.
I tried to check the VIN, but no luck as more information was needed to access the Kia system.

The SC147 recall is when the dealer does a sound test on the engine and the KSDS update is done. If it passed their sound test they just do the update and send you on your way. If it fails they replace engine and do the update free of charge. Your engine should have a lifetime warranty from the dealership if it seizes, did oil changes regularly and your oil level was good at the time it seized.

According to this post, 953 update does not need to be done, for the lifetime warranty.

Let's put it this way, that's what the Hyundai Tech stated, but I've not heard of anyone
that owns a Kia, or even a Hyundai, report back that the engine was replaced and they
did not have the 953 done, so guess this could be the perfect test case.

The SC147 was the initial inspection back in 2017 and the KSDS (953) came at a later date,
late 2018, early 2019, 2 separate customer service campaigns.

I am going through this same thing. I will give you what happened to me. Son driving home, engine stopped working. Tried to jump start, started smoking. Spoke to dealer service dept. Said that if car engine seized, it was replaceable but they needed to run tests. Car towed to Kia, AAA and some expense by me. Said they would look at engine. Since so many engines being replaced, no rental car and if engine seized, corporate sends tech to look at engine. They will run your vin to see if you had the necessary recall updates done for the "free" engine part.

Spoke to my regular mechanic. He said that there are no new engines just laying around. That they are built as the order comes in. His cost to replace engine with a rebuilt engine was around $8k.

I am discussing this in another thread where I am putting updates as I go.

Hello everyone,
First, thank you for your support and assistance!
Second, update:
- I called Kia Corporate and have a case number. KC had the cat towed to the local Kia dealership (free.)

- The Optima arrived at the dealership 10 working days ago. They still haven't begun to diagnose the issue.

Question: Is there a time limit the dealership has to do something? Do you think I should call Kia corporate?

Thanks very much .

No time limit that I'm aware of. Some have waited weeks for service, and months to have an
engine replaced. I'm not saying that is the norm, but couldn't believe the time some have had to wait.

The problem is if they act fast and diagnose it now, then they are on the hook for covering your rental vehicle. If they let it sit without diagnosing it, then you don't get free rental.

People have said this, but there is no wording in the "Settlement" that states only a rental/loaner
after diagnosis.

Daughter had her car towed to the dealership, rental immediately, they did the same for me, loaner since day one.
