My mechanic (AKA Husband) is a stickler for details...K&N does not list an intake yet on their website for the 2016-up Optima 2.4. Is this K&N intake made for the 2016-up Optima 2.4L or is it the one listed for the 2015 Optima 2.4, and you know it will fit the 2016-up? (I think I typed this the way he said too) Thanks!

Let your husband know he is exactly correct and on point. We live breath and eat Optima day in and day out here. So many times, a manufacturer will not list an intake as being compatible on a vehicle, until they themselves have test fitted it to ensure it will fit properly.

However, we have customers that come in store and do test fitting for us all the time. We were able to determine last year that the intake for the 2011-2015 Kia Optima 2.4L models, would be a direct fit for the 2016-2018 Kia Optima 2.4L models, and therefore listed it as such on our site. Even though K&N does not acknowledge this on their own site. Rest assured that we would never list a product on our site that we hadn't first confirmed to fit that vehicle. ;)

Thanks for the reply! Did any of the owners that installed the K&N intake keep the air intake in place (the part that bolts to the radiator support) after the install or did they have to remove it? he says there doesn't appear to be anything to hold the intake up without the air box - looks like it will have to lay on the battery.

Welcome! Yeah, absolutely, why not. I am confused as to what you mean about the last part. We have sold at least a dozen or two of these intake systems to newer 16-18 Optima owners, and have never had an issue or had anyone report back any problems.

Sorry...the part I'm referring to is the original intake duct that attaches to the radiator support then into the original air filter box. (On my Forte the K&N intake had a hole in the heat shield that the intake duct fit into so you could keep the original intake duct in place.) We've tried searches for pictures of a K&N intake installed on the 2016-2017 Optima with no luck. The intake duct is different between the 2011/15 and 2016/17 Optimas. The 11/15 duct is next to the battery - the 16/17 duct goes over the battery. In the picture of the K&N intake there does not appear to be a hole in the heat shield to mount the original intake duct into.

I will try and find some images and or figure out exactly how it is suppoted, but I know this is bolted up and supported in some way and not just laying there where the factory air box is. Let me do some research on my end on this, and get back with you here tomorrow!

I'm not sure the 2016 factory intake system is the same as the 2017 factory intake either. The 2017 intake is completely different then the 2015 - the 2015 and earlier Optima's inlet tube is to the left of the battery - doesn't go over the battery. On the 2017 2.4 there is a "box" attached to the back of the filter housing and it has a vacuum tube attached to it. Is there an attachment for this additional hose on the K&N intake or would that have to be fabricated?

The attached photo - I think is a 2016 engine compartment. My 2017 Optima's 2.4 intake is not the same, but similar - the tube from the throttle body makes a 90 degree turn into the air filter box (not 45 degrees as in the picture) - it also has another large box that is cast on the back of, and is part of, the filter box.

(I don't have a good digital camera to take a picture of my engine compartment - and I can't find a good picture of the 2017 engine compartment on-line to show the difference.)

There shouldnt be an extra vacuum tubes, make sure that these extra pieces arent just connected to the intake set up itself which would be removed upon installing the K&N intake.

Although the intake duct is different on the 16-18 compared to the 11-15 it does not hinder the install of the K&N intake nor will it change the way the intake functions and still will divert air towards the K&N intake filter

Is this what you're asking?

Paul...Husband here... I don't want to pay $300 for an intake and then have to start fabricating parts to make it work. Are there 2 or 3 vacuum attachments on the K&N intake? I want to keep the factory intake inlet duct in place (more for cooling air to the ECM actually - like the Forte K&N Intake) but it looks like there is nothing to hold it in place - i don't want it bouncing on top of the battery.
This box in the back is different from what I see in the pictures - I suspect that it is just a baffle, but, without taking it apart I'm not sure there is something else in there. Kia went out of their way to add this box to the filter system and I don't know why.

Hey! There are two vacuum hose fittings on the K&N intake.

As for the stock snorkel I know the two bolts at the front should secure it in place, I havent replaced an intake on the new 16-18 2.4L so I can't say for sure what else is holding that in place. The addition (the box you're referring to) is most likely as you said a baffling system to cut down on intake noise from the factory. Adding an open element intake would eliminate the need for this anyways due to the open element filter.

As David stated before this intake has been purchased and installed by many customers without issues or need to fab new parts. The only change we state in the instructions is the need to use only 3 of the 4 bolts supplied to mount the intake.
