Hi everyone,

It pains me to say that I’m having issues with my 2015 Optima. It’s got a GDI 2.4 Theta engine with just under 124,000 miles on it, which appears to have been apart of the infamous recall and extended warranty.

I’ve had a small oil leak underneath my car and there’s a noticeable smell of burning oil and a small amount of smoke under the hood upon turning the engine off. I’ve topped it up before, but it’s still happening. I took it to an independent shop and they said that it was the valve cover gasket.

I took it to another shop to get a second opinion and the tech showed me that there is compression blowing out of the oil cap. He said that it’s likely the piston rings and that he wouldn’t replace the valve cover gasket because that compression will either return to the oil pan or cause a more major seal to break. He said that I should take it to the dealership and have them look at it, but that it seems to be a step or two away from knocking. I took it to the dealer just now and the tech said that it would be $150 to diagnose it and that loss of compression isn’t covered under the extended warranty. I didn’t let them do the diagnosis and I’m kind of at a loss.

I have a decent understanding of cars and I’m wondering what my course of action should be because I’m at a bit of a loss now. Should I just drive it until it breaks and hopefully throw a rod or is the leak destined to cause a bigger issue that wouldn’t be covered? Should I try and sell it and just get something else? The car is paid off.

Thanks.

I’m somewhat mechanically inclined and I’m wondering what my course of action should be because I’m at a bit of a loss now. Should I just drive it until it breaks and hopefully throw a rod or is the leak destined to cause a bigger issue that wouldn’t be covered? Should I try and sell it and just get something else? Replace PCV valve. make sure hose is not clogged from PCV to intake manifold. there should also be a breather hose that you may want to make sure isn't clogged from valve cover to air intake hose.

What exactly were you shown, like what did you see in the 2nd situation to indicate compression blowing out of the oil cap?

It sounds like chauncey has a good approach. Why is pressure building up inside the valve cover and unable to escape? Once you figure that out, then you can re-evaluate the valve cover gasket to see if the leak stops. Excessive pressure inside there could push oil out no matter how good the gasket is.

With 125K miles on this puppy, I like chauncey's replace the PCV valve idea, as its time for replacement & some have had that help with oil consumption.

If that doesn't help & with your post of it leaking oil past the valve cover seal from what sounds like a engine over-pressure from mucked up / stuck piston rings causing excessive blow by, review this Kia excessive oil consumption test & piston soak procedure to see if that'll free up the rings & if not & it consumes over 1qt / 1K miles, then Kia replaces the engine. More thoughts for consideration, let us know what you find, do & how it goes.
