Yesterday while I was stopped at a red light. All of a sudden, I get a dash warning. It displayed HEV in a triangle, then said to shift into park and turn off vehicle and check hybrid system. I shifted into park and turned the car off. I tried starting it back up to no avail. Kept saying check hybrid system. I was able to get the car into nuetral while an officer pushed my out of the intersection. Once I made it to the side of the road. I kept getting strange warnings to check brakes, check front air flap and to recharge system. After being towed, the tow truck driver hooked up his jump box to my starter battery and it fired right up. He hooked up his volt meter to it and said it was only reading 6 volts when not cranked, when we cranked it jumped up to 12 volts. My question is, is there a easy way to tell if its my starter battery or if the hybrid battery is shot. Vehicle was purchased used in 2015, I'm assuming its still the original battery. Im at 120k so warranty is out of the question. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like your original 12 V battery is failing on you.

Those are usually only good for around 2-3 years with Kia and if you still have the original battery from 2014 when you bought the vehicle, I would lean towards that being the issue.

The Hybrid uses a calcium based 12v battery, and they do have advantages over the lead based battery but they also require higher charging voltage than a lead battery. The OEM battery is @ $500 list and can be had for @ $300 when found.
If one were to go to the Odyssey website, input the hybrid info...NO MATCHES, however Interstate comes up with MTP-H6R, and that is an ordinary flooded. Maybe an AGM battery would be best, but you'll need to get one that is the same size as the OEM battery, so check closely.

I bought the Odyssey battery from Autozone but wont be here until tomorrow. A couple things i've noticed. THe OEM battery has a vent tube, I dont see where the Odyssey has a vent tube. the OEM battery also has a 150A fuse. Im assuming I can reuse the 150A fuse. Not sure what to do about the vent tube though.

Update: Finally got my car back from KIA. They said my 12v starter battery was so drained, "it popped my power relay assembly ($800) and safety plug assembly ($182). and had to replace the battery ($373) which I just purchased. $2400 later its fixed. They could not tell me why this happended which is very frustrating. I'd like to know if the battery Autozone said would worked caused this problem. The KIA mechanic would not commit to saying thats what caused the problems. Merry Christmas

I wonder if independent shops are getting any better at diagnosing and fixing hybrid cars, because that $2400 Kia bill is just outrageous. Sorry for the crappy start to your holidays.

I took it to my local mechanic. He said the KIA error codes are completely different than what he is use to. I called a few other local shops and they said they would not work on it due to the High Voltage Battery.
