Can a shorted battery cause the starter to be destroyed?

Very strange. Dealer said that "something" in my battery caused my starter to fail (be destroyed). They replaced the starter (still didn't start), then replaced the battery and everything worked!

    Strange!

    Am I being bamboozled?

Ask for your old starter back as I would say it was the battery to begin with.

Why would I want the old starter back? They said it was bad.

If you get your old starter back, you could have it tested independently to see if it was really the issue to begin with, or if they sold you unneeded service. It is unlikely that the battery caused the starter to go bad.
Unfortunately, if you ask for it now, they will probably say they don't have it anymore, or they give you some old starter from another car that wasn't yours to begin with, just to keep you from complaining.
