    A/C compressor noise / knock

I have a 2013 Optima LX with the 2.4 motor. Has anyone experienced a knocking noise that seems to be coming from the A/C compressor? When the A/C is off , the car sounds like a diesel engine at low rpms , usually under 1,000. When i turn the A/C on , the noise goes away. I changed the idler pulley and the belt tensioner. Also with the accessory belt removed , there is no noise at all. The noise also goes away after a couple of minutes of driving.

Hmm, haven't heard of this before. Wonder if the compressor itself is starting to fail.

I take it you most likely are no longer under warranty to have the dealer take a look at it?

Just an fyi-When you turn the a/c off, the compressor internals are still turning as this compressor is unlike the "old" units that had a clutch. The VDC on my car made quite a bit of noise all the time, then when the solenoid went bad I replaced the compressor with a relatively new used unit (20k miles).

I would think if it made noise, it would make it all the time, especially under a heavy load. Will need to do some research.

Also at idle with the A/C off or on , the noise isn't there. When i put the car in drive , A/C off , and the rpms decrease , the noise is there. Once the rpms go back up its gone.

and you've checked for a slipping belt? And perhaps replace the other idler pulley?

Check tensioner. Remove the serpentine belt and check all the pulleys, tensioner and idlers.
