    2012 Optima LX shifting issue

as the title states...found out a couple of weeks ago from dealer that the shift lock release has been bypassed with a portion of a pen body that was cut down to size and jammed into the cover to keep the shift release button depressed. WTF over? anyway, cars history is it's a used car I bought two years ago. face it, the car fax is only as good as the reporting!!!
anyway, have checked the brake switch, ignition switch, shift lock solenoid and the neutral safety switch(inhibitor), and all fuses. no codes shown on the reader, replaced each of the before mentioned components except fuses one by one to include the brake pedal rubber stop as it had a hole worn through it...all this and the dang car still will not shift out of park. removed the center console and then the shifter as a whole unit looking for any broken plastic parts that may cause it not to shift, yielded nothing.

    any thoughts?

When the console was off, did you check the end of the cable from the brake, it's covered in plastic, at least on older models. Sometimes the end gets stuck and won't allow the shifter to move.

sorry for the late response, didn't notice if the brake cable was a factor...but the issue seems to be electrical with the sequence of events, not sure which comes first: brake pedal being pressed (brake switch)disengaged, key inserted into the ignition and turned to on/start would signal the shift solenoid to pull the release lever allowing the shifter to move out of park. not sure at what point the neutral safety switch comes into play or it merely tells the ecu gear position.

ready to trade this in for a classic vw bug which does not have all of today's electronic BS!!!
