Saleman says must use Kia Oil filter if DIY or others change oil

Just got 2012 ex two days ago. Was surprised when I asked about taking the car for oil change at my own mechanic or doing it myself. He said no problem but said you must use a Kia Oil filter or you will void the warranty.
    Sounds suspcious to me.
I am a senior and only drive about 7k a year. I certainly am not going to change oil every 3 months. I plan on twice a year but am concerned about these guys holding to rigid requirement or voiding warranty.

Dealer prices are much too high compared to locals.

The salesman is just trying to scare you into taking your car to the dealership to do the changes. They make more money.

just because he can sell the car does not make him an expert on anything else.

Not a bad idea to use OEM filters, just buy your own online and take them to your mechanic.

First off, you can use any quality oil filter you want. Salesmen don't know much about parts and service end of things. That being said Kia filters are great quality and a good no brainer choice. I could, (if you are looking) sell them to you at a cheap price. PM me, if you need any.

I recommend using Kia filters as well. They're designed for the car, and they're $6 if you to to a dealership and buy it yourself. I've done it for every oil change, and they even give you a replacement washer for the drain plug.

He's technically correct, if the aftermarket filter you use causes an engine problem that can be traced back to flow restriction or lack of filtration. Kia has already addressed an engine noise issue with the 2.0 Forte that was traced back to the use of restrictive oil filters. Aftermarket filters are now on their radar. I'm not saying a non-Kia filter is going to cause an engine problem, but if you develop a valvetrain noise, the filter could be the culprit. If it causes any actual damage, it won't be covered by your warranty.

^Exactly. I don't mind buying OEM filters, they're still cheap, and I know my ass will be covered in case something goes wrong.

Dealer only charges like $27 for an oil change... at least here in San Antonio.
