I'm not saying a non-Kia filter is going to cause an engine problem, but if you develop a valvetrain noise, the filter could be the culprit. If it causes any actual damage, it won't be covered by your warranty.
This is correct. Using a too large, or too small of a filter can cause oil pressure problems. On all the motors I built for Audi's, I always use the OEM filters. There are companys that make OEM filters though.

Seems like this is more of a problem with Kia than it is for the consumers...I just had my Forte in for a appraisal 2 weeks ago for a trade in....actually first round of negotiating for Optima today....Anyway I provided the appraiser all my mechanic work, which consisted mostly of oil changes, tire rotations, filling fluids and that's it. I showed him all the receipts from the oil changes where I bought the Oil (Mobil1) and Filters (Wix or Mobil1) and he was impressed with how detailed I kept everything. I asked about using my own stuff and he said "No I see nothing wrong with your maintenance".....This was always a big discussion on ForteForums. People who didn't even know would make comments saying your warranty would be void not using OEM filter and such. That was the first question I asked before leaving with my Forte after I bought it. I was told NO NO NO those are all rumors. I said good because it's a hour drive to get to my dealership. Use some good oil, either a kia oil filter or Wix and you will be fine. Oh and document document document.....

Buying the filter from the dealer leaves a good record for warranty purposes...

If all consumers only used OEM filters than all these sub companies that produced OEM specification parts would be out of business. I've used K&N filters mostly in my other cars. Like i said in another post I'll be using the KIA oil filters..

Here is some interesting stuff from Mobile Oil:

You should break in your engine with conventional oil, then switch to a synthetic oil like Mobil 1.
    Reality:
You can start using Mobil 1 in new vehicles at any time, even in brand new vehicles. In fact, Mobil 1 is original equipment (it is installed at the factory) in:
    • Acura RDX
    • Aston Martin DB9, DB9 Volante, DBS, DBS Volante, Virage, Virage Volante, Rapide
    • All Bentley Vehicles
    • Bristol Fighter
    • Chevrolet Camaro SS
    • Chevrolet Corvette Z06, ZR1 and Grand Sport Coupe
    • Chevrolet CR8
    • Chrysler 300C SRT-8
    • Dodge Challenger SRT-8
    • Holden HSV
    • Ilmor MV-10 710 Marine Engines
    • Lexus LFA
    • Mercedes-Benz AMG Vehicles
    • Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution
    • Nissan GT-R
    • Opel Insignia
    • All Porsche Vehicles
    • All S&S Motorcycles
    • Saab 9-3 TTiD
    • Vauxhall VXR8
    • Viper Motorcycles
One of the myths surrounding synthetic oils is that new engines require a break-in period with conventional oil. The fact is, current engine manufacturing technology does not require this break-in period. As indicated by the decisions of the engineers who design the high-performance cars listed above, Mobil 1 can be used starting the day you drive the car off the showroom floor.
Myth: Using Mobil 1 will void the warranty on my new car.
    Reality:

Mobil 1 and Mobil 1 Extended Performance will not void new car warranties, with the exception of the Mazda rotary engine (Mazda does not recommend any synthetic motor oil). Mobil 1 exceeds the API and ILSAC motor oil service requirements for all new vehicles, both import and domestic. If in doubt, always check your vehicle owner's manual or contact your vehicle's manufacturer.

Since most new car warranties call for shorter service intervals than those enabled by Mobil 1 Extended Performance, ExxonMobil recommends you follow the recommendations in your owner's manual while your car is under warranty.

Myth: I need to flush my engine before switching to Mobil 1.
    Reality:
No special preparation is necessary when switching from conventional motor oil to Mobil 1 or Mobil 1 Extended Performance.
Myth: Mobil 1 and Mobil 1 Extended Performance require a special oil filter.
    Reality:

While ExxonMobil recommends that you use a high-quality filter, you can use the same type of oil filter that you would normally use with conventional oil. ExxonMobil does offer a very high-quality oil filter that is a perfect companion to Mobil 1. The Mobil 1 Extended Performance Oil Filter contains synthetic blend filter media instead of the typical cellulose filter media. With a 99.2 percent efficiency rating (under SAE J1858 Multi-Pass Efficiency Test), the Mobil 1 filter is much more efficient than a typical oil filter. Its new high-capacity design stores more contaminants (two times the capacity of the leading brand).

I plan on using the OEM filter. The Optima has hi-performance engine(s) that operate with very small tolerances. Only a decade ago were engines capable of producing 100 horsepower per liter without turbocharging or supercharging. My engine has 200 horsepower with 2.4 liters. Less than a gallon of space. It requires a very specific type of oil combined with the proper filter in order to protect the engine. I don't know about you, but I am going to follow the service manual as long as it makes sense to do so. I love my EX, and I am not going to quibble over $5. once every 3 to 6 months and risk shortening the life of my car.

I have a question along these lines. Since I have done MANY mods to my car. If I take it for an oil change and for example have a custom intake and fog lights/DRL's and so on Will they note that stuff and possibly bite me in the butt later for a warranty issue? I would like to go to Kia for my oil changes but am afraid and I do not want to have to take my car apart and change everything to stock just to change my oil? What are your thoughts on this??

loman - realistically they'll pop the hood, loosen the oil fill cap...put it on the lift...do your filter change...fill it with oil and close the hood. I know of no dealers that notate mods done to a car nor do I believe that a mod will prevent warranty work in the future as it is solely up to the dealer to prove that what you have done was the cause and that can be very difficult to do. If you want to go to your dealer...then do it without trepidation:smile:
