You HAVE to tap at the bulbs themselves (or their contacts obviously) in the panel. There is no other way to do it. Got out my multimeter and was doing some wiring in there so I figured I'd run some wire for when I do this mod. Soldered a positive wire and a negative wire onto the bulb contact patch leads... hard to describe. I can post pics when I do this mod. I took plenty.
BTW the reason you have to do it this way is because Kia uses a switched ground rather than a switched positive (like BMW does) for their courtesy lighting. Even the scuff plate "Kia" lighting is done this way. I tried a ton of different wires to avoid tapping at the dome light... no luck.
yeah just like crystal said it's kinda hard to find the right wire for the leds to dim like the interior lights. if i remember i tap to one side of the dome light switch and then tap into the positive side on the dome light itself this way your leds on the doors handle will light up when u approach the car and when u open the door and dim with the rest of the lights. this way also when u turn on the dome light in the car the leds WON'T turn on. the way i did it was used a multi tester when i found the wires i needed in this case the contacts i used an led and touched the contacts to see if it's the affect i wanted and after that solder your wires and your done with the dome light. just take your time with the handles taking then aparts they are kind hard at first but after u do one the rest are easy.
^ I'll haved to check again because i'd rather it not come on all the time with the domes. Was it the yllow/black wire u tapped?
no i took the dome light out and soldered directly to the path ways of the switch and soldered the positive to the positive side of the light bulb this way it DOESN'T come on when u turn on the dome light. don.'t remember witch contacts i solder to ont eh switch but u can always use an extra led and put the positive side on the dome light light bulb and touch the negative side to the switch u will see the path ways i believe looking from the top it was the left side of the switch i solder too. just use a soldering iron to melt back the plastic to have more of a soldering surface.
Dude, you need to write a mod book, listing all you mods. I will bet there are a bunch of people who would pay you for your mods. They would probabky pay even more if you could do them.
dumb question sorry: Is there plug and play version of this mod that doesn't require soldering/cutting of wires? Possibly just installation of new door handles?
No not yet our cars doesn't have the proper harness for the door handles of the k5 for it to be a plug and play. U have to do everything from scratch.
There any way we can get a DIY and a link to the parts used for this mod. THX
