2013 Optima SXL Fuel Problem - P0087 DTC - Fuel Rail/System Pressure Too Low

    2013 Kia Optima SXL
    2nd Owner
69k miles on the odometer / out of warranty.

Out of the blue I lost power while driving, then the check engine light came on which kicked out the code "P0087 DTC - Fuel Rail/System Pressure Too Low". Now this might be incorrect, but I'm assuming since the car went into limp mode which allowed me to get home this was simply fuel pressure being provided by the fuel pump in the tank, not the high pressure fuel pump on the top side.

Is the high pressure fuel pump a dealer only item?
Or am I missing something entirely here?
Do I need to replace both the in-tank pump and the HPFP on the top side?

I typically refuse to let anyone work on my vehicles, especially dealers with their hideous fees. I'm not finding a whole lot of info on anyone that's done this type of repair on their own, I'm hoping someone here has though.

Any advice / info would be extremely appreciated.

Just spoke with the service department at the dealership, confirmed it's the High Pressure Fuel Pump on the fuel rail. They also recommend replacing the feed tube and bolts.

Out of warranty cost for parts:

$580 - high pressure fuel pump
    $58 - feed tube
    $4 - bolts

Hope this doesn't happen to any of you

Yeah that sounds about right, actually a cheap price honestly. I have done a ton of them. You need to replace the bolts and feed tube as well as they are one time use parts.

Sorry to hear this happened to you. It happened to one of our local customers and it cost him a bit closer to $900 with labor for everything.

How is this not covered under the 10yr/120k warranty? The vehicle can't operate without a fuel pump.

Wasn't this related to a recall or TSB?

Even the original owner would be paying for this. This falls under the 5/60 basic kia warranty. Power train only covers things internally in the engine or trans. Unfortunately the GDI pump is on top of the valve cover.

Let me know if I can help with the parts cost. Shoot me a PM and I can see what I can do.
