There have been threads about Nexcel all in one oil reservoirs/filters before. It's not news. What i did just find out after reading the April issue of MotorTrend, did surprise/annoy me.
And I quote: "The sealed Nexcel unit comes pre-filled with the manuf. specified oil and filter, anda chip on the reservoir verifies this this with an electronic handshake with the ECU before the engine will restart."
So essentially once these become mainstream, and assuming these will come OEM at some point, we will no longer be allowed to choose our own oil and filters, and the car will be rendered inoperable until we run their product. Isn't that against our beloved Moss-Magnuson Warranty Act? As per that law warranty can not be dependent on a certain brand of part unless it is provided free of charge (aka be allowed to use aftermarket otherwise provide free OEM parts.) By extension i would think this covers oil changes and that the car should not be tied to a Nexcel unit to make it run.
Personally I hope these units dont make it. It's bad for our community.
Nice to be back
