Just read something that bugs the snot out of me.

There have been threads about Nexcel all in one oil reservoirs/filters before. It's not news. What i did just find out after reading the April issue of MotorTrend, did surprise/annoy me.

And I quote: "The sealed Nexcel unit comes pre-filled with the manuf. specified oil and filter, anda chip on the reservoir verifies this this with an electronic handshake with the ECU before the engine will restart."

So essentially once these become mainstream, and assuming these will come OEM at some point, we will no longer be allowed to choose our own oil and filters, and the car will be rendered inoperable until we run their product. Isn't that against our beloved Moss-Magnuson Warranty Act? As per that law warranty can not be dependent on a certain brand of part unless it is provided free of charge (aka be allowed to use aftermarket otherwise provide free OEM parts.) By extension i would think this covers oil changes and that the car should not be tied to a Nexcel unit to make it run.

Personally I hope these units dont make it. It's bad for our community.

I would assume that they will make them so you can put any oil and filter in them and it would just verify that it's full.

We need to see more of the paragraph this sentence came from, to figure out what the sentence means by "verifies this" - what does "this" refer to? Unfortunately, your excerpted sentence could mean various things, depending on what is meant by "this":

    1. verifies the unit is sealed
    2. verifies the unit is pre-filled
    3. verifies the unit has the manuf. specified oil and filter
    4. other

I included the other, because variations 1-3 merely use an exact snippet of the sentence itself. However, you can never be sure with writing that includes ambiguous terms like "this" so it's possible that "this" could be something not included in the excerpted sentence, such as "verifies that the unit is not empty."

I'm guessing that Nexcel is merely re-using the type of handshake you'd find in toner cartridges, which will refuse to work if the unit is empty or the chip is unrecognized/3rd party/refilled.
